Episode #14 [ɜː] as in ‘nurse’
18 November 2016
Hello, and welcome to this week’s Real English video.
I’m Darcy, and today we’ll be talking about the [ɜː] vowel as in ‘nurse’.
To pronounce this sound, your jaw lowers slightly, your mouth is open, and your tongue is in the center of your mouth with the tongue body bunched towards the back of the mouth.
Because this sound is followed by an ‘r’, the exact position of your tongue may vary slightly.
[ɜː], [ɜː], [ɜː]
Here are a few words with the [ɜː] sound: nurse, first, third, purpose.
And here’s a tongue twister to help you remember: Elizabeth’s birthday is on the third Thursday of the month.
Make sure your practice for at least 1 minute everyday and see how good you can get by next week.
Good luck and we’ll see you next Friday.
